Rogano

Features: Bar, Outdoor Seating, Cuisine: Seafood
Average Price Per Person: £70
Nearest Transport: Buchanan Street / Glasgow Underground

Established in 1935, Rogano still retains its elegant 1930s Art Deco style and serves highly acclaimed Scottish fish and seafood. Enjoy a drink and perhaps some oysters in the Oyster Bar downstairs or enjoy dinner in a less formal setting in Cafe Rogano. Regardless of which you choose, Rogano offers a memorable evening out.

As Londoners pride themselves on the Ivy, Glaswegians have the Rogano to boast about.  Decadent and sleek, this venue represents the ‘art deco’ era to its fullest. Not only does the Rogano offer you thirst quenching drinks, but the food is of great appeal too. Don’t worry if you fail to complement the interior with suave attire, this place will treat you like an A lister – without the ‘do you know who I am?’ spiel…

Disappointing, given the price and Rogano's reputation. The welcome wasn't exactly warm, though subsequent waiting staff were helpful and polite. My oysters to start were small and undistinguished; my halibut main course a woolly lumo of overcooked protein. My partner's monkfish was better, but still on the wrong side of 'doneness'. The accompaniments, particularly the truffle-laced white beans, were very good; but a fish restaurant stands or falls by its skill in handling the main event--the fish! The chef took the halibut main course off our bill, which was much appreciated; and our very pleasant waitress did her best to console. Last time I was there my rare steak arrived medium well-done. These are basic cooking errors that shouldn't be occurring in this price bracket.

Similar problem with myself, one guy was very agressive and scruffy.

Very disappointing meal. The waiting staff were very nice and polite but when I asked to speak to a manager called Thomas about this, he was very dismissive and rude to me. We've been going for years on special occasions and will not be back. I will be writing a letter to complain very soon.

Went to Rogano with friends on friday 20th for dinner. We ate in the cafe, so cool and relaxed and the staff were great. Loved it so much that we went up to the bar after dinner, where the staff who were rushed off their feet still gave excellent service. What made it a good night was the welcome and assistance we recieved from the staff at the front door. Not only charming but they found us space when hadn't made a booking.

This film is part of the Mitchell and Kenyon collection - an amazing visual record of everyday life in Britain at the beginning of the twentieth century.
