A guide to Byres
Road
by Claire Thomson
In the heart of the West End of Glasgow,
Byres Road is buzzing with entertainment, bars, restaurants,
delicatessens, student coffee bars and interesting shops.
Byres Road is the perfect location for a day of exploration,
shopping, dining and drinking. You could start the day off
with some self-indulgent shopping: Byres Road is filled with
loads of great little eclectic shops selling just about everything
- from the One World Trade Shop to John Smith & Sons bookshop.
Decourcey's Arcade is in the cobbled Cresswell Lane (just
off Byres Road) and has units such as 'Felix & Oscar' and
'Lost in Music', selling antiques, gifts, crafts and records.
Independent record shops Fopp and Echo are also great for
cheaply priced CDs, while Echo also sells second-hand items.
Mr. Benn clothes shop has now reopened on Byres road (after
Virginia Galleries in the city centre was shut down) and sells
lots of great second-hand retro clothes, including leather
jackets. And if you're looking for something a bit different
then Starry Starry Night provides Victorian gowns, Charleston
dresses and 70s retro gear!
After you're tired out from all the shopping you can then
take your pick from all the great restaurants on Byres Road.
Whether you enjoy Chinese, Belgian, bar food, or Italian you
something for here for all tastes. The pick of the crop include
:
Antipasti (Italian cafe/restaurant)

Afterwards, you may want to take in a few bars, of which there
are many on Byres Road! The Attic is just above the Cul de
Sac restaurant and is a stylish designer bar with cool, calm
surroundings. Further down Byres Road is The Living Room,
near Kelvin Hall Underground, with a chilled-out relaxing
atmosphere and good music. They have plenty of drinks promos,
a happy hour, and DJs five nights a week.
Ashton Lane off Byres Road is a great place to go for a few
drinks any time of the year, but during the long summer evenings
the lane generates an amazing atmosphere like no other, with
crowds of people eating and drinking outside.
Byres Road is a place like no other, and has to be experienced,
as it's another one of the great perks of living in Glasgow!
