Feature
It’s no secret that Glaswegians know how to party hard – drinking, staying up all night and generally having a laugh are all things that the people in this city are renowned for. So it won’t come as a surprise to learn that Glasgow has the most vibrant club scene outside of London, with an eclectic mix of clubs and bars in which to get p****d and dance your troubles away. But where to start (or end) your big night out?
The DJs’ Club
The Arches was recently voted the tenth best club in the world by a panel of 600 DJs. Why? Could it be the consistently brilliant line up of talent (Mylo played his first gig here and the likes of Carl Cox and Judge Jules have been regulars)? Or could it be the full on nights featuring music as wide ranging as electro punk, house and party tunes? Or is it the atmosphere? This is one of the friendliest venues in Glasgow and the last place you’ll find trouble.
The Gay Club
Glasgow’s ever burgeoning gay scene owes a lot to Bennet’s, the city’s number one gay club. Newly refurbed Bennet’s plays host to fit men in not very much and plays the campest tunes around without heading in to cliché territory. The monthly women only night, Girls On Top, is the icing on the cake.
The Celeb Spot
If you were a celebrity and out for a night in Glasgow where would you go? Well you’d want smooth sounds, uber-cool clubbing companions and a stylista atmosphere…Bar Budda it is. Already a favourite with local footballers, those in the know head here for a cocktail or two before dancing around their Prada handbags all night.
On The Pull
You’re still standing at the end of the night and you don’t want the party to end…so where to head to pick up a lad or lady? Blanket is the lair of the sleaze, full of gagging for it lads shimmying up to grind against girls wearing little more than a handkerchief to cover their dignity. Don those beer goggles and go forth to a world of R&B and snogging on the dance floor…just don’t say we didn’t warn you.
The Cheesy Club
It’s a favourite student hangout, it plays retro party tunes, there’s a bloody great truck hanging out of the front of it. It has to be The Garage. Full of students in ‘hilarious’ afro wigs, doing the YMCA moves ‘ironically’ and talking about ‘classic’ children’s TV shows, The Garage is the ultimate in camembert clubbing. Expect to hear Abba.
The Alternative Choice
There are plenty of places to pick from if you want to party to guitar based choons but when it comes to truly alternative music head for Sub Club or, more specifically, Sub Club’s excellently bizarre and twisted Optimo (Espacio) night. With a wide ranging record collection, JD Twitch and JG Wilkes have plenty of surprises up their sleeves every week not to mention the pick of up and coming local bands to put on stage.
